UCSF-Fresno has received grant funding from Health Resources and Services Administration to begin a fellowship in preventative medicine and public health which will include an MPH degree in addition to experiences at local and state public health agencies.

Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Training Program

Fresno Department of Public Health
Requirements: MD or DO, board-certified or board-eligible in internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, occupational medicine or obstetrics and gynecology.
Training length: 2 years, including 11-month Master of Public Health degree
Start date: Between July 1, 2023-Sept 1, 2023
Applications considered on a rolling basis, final due date of June 30, 2023.
Salary: Based on post-graduate year (PGY). MPH tuition is also covered by the training program. Sponsoring institutions include the University of California San Francisco-California Fresno (UCSF-Fresno), UCSF- Main Campus, UC-Berkeley (UCB) and Fresno Country Department of Public Health (FCDPH)
Locations: Fresno, California; Berkeley, California.
Description: The UCSF-Fresno Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Training Program is designed to prepare future public health physicians to gain proficiency in public health practice, epidemiology, and disease control and response at the population level. Training in public health practice includes conducting research and clinical quality improvement activities, data analysis, report writing, public speaking, teaching, and policy analysis. The selected Trainee will complete all requirements necessary to meet board eligibility for Public Health and General Preventive Medicine.
Activities include:

Completion of a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree within the UCB School of Public Health1

Public health rotations in Fresno county and California Departments of Public Health (CDPH)

Clinical and programmatic training in occupational medicine
- Patient care provision on a part-time basis in a federally qualified health center (FQHC)
Training Settings: The selected Trainee will be an important member of multidisciplinary teams at UCSF, UCSF-Fresno and the FCDPH. Team members will include public health practitioners, clinicians, epidemiologists, behavioral scientists, statisticians, and policy analysts. UCSF-Fresno maintains strong relationships with the academic communities of UCSF-Main Campus, UCB, state agencies (e.g., CDPH), and neighboring local health departments in the Central Valley. The Trainee will have opportunities to work with diverse partners such as managed care organizations, community-based organizations, correctional facilities, schools, and laboratories. Mentors at UCSF and UCSF-Fresno and colleagues are experienced, enthusiastic about training, and well-qualified.
Program Funding and Administration: The UCSF-Fresno Program is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration and administered by the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Available support for the Trainee includes tuition for MPH program, administrative, computer technical, data entry and management, and statistical. Financial support for additional training or travel to scientific conferences may also be available.
